If you have been waiting for a cyberpunk noir you can live inside for a month of commutes, this is the one.
What is Neon Nights about?
Siro is an organized-crime specialist transferred from Olympias III, the Brazilian megacity, into Olympias I in North America. He lands in Oldtown, where life is cheap and the syndicates know how to slip the all-seeing city above. His partner is Kate Spader, sharp, cynical, and the character reviewers keep singling out. The harvested victims are their case, and the one that cracks it open is a beloved TV star whose polished smile hid a second life in Oldtown’s red light district. Was he a victim, or something else?
The investigation climbs. It starts in Oldtown’s gutters and ends in the penthouses, and somewhere in between someone tries to kill both detectives. That is when the Guardian Angels arrive, the elite cyborg enforcers of Olympias, who may be there to help or may be there for reasons of their own. Books two and three widen the frame. Neon Dreams puts Siro and Kate on a fresh set of crimes that only make sense in Olympias, and Neon Fever, which reached audio this April, closes the trilogy. Across all three the register stays the same: a police procedural conducted in a city where the police answer to something larger than the law.
Why does Mocikat’s cyberpunk feel different?
Because it comes from the other tradition. Most English-language cyberpunk descends from Gibson and the American paperback. Mocikat traces hers to anime. In an interview with Grimdark Magazine she put it plainly: “I’ve been in love with Cyberpunk since I saw Ghost in the Shell.” Her touchstones are Akira, Appleseed and Ergo Proxy, and it shows. Her cities are visual before they are anything else. Her cyborgs are bodies first, metaphors second. Violence and sex are on the page because that is what the genre was always doing when nobody was policing it.
She came to novels by a long road. Born in Warsaw and raised mostly in Munich, she went to film school there, spent years as a screenwriter in the German film industry, directed short films that picked up awards, and then wrote for the German video game business before moving to South Carolina in 2016. Her English-language debut was Shadow City in 2019, and the Behind Blue Eyes series followed, the one about a killer cyborg who discovers that everything she was raised to believe is a lie. It also explains the confidence. Mocikat was traditionally published in Germany by a large house before going independent, and on this release she is author and producer of record. The trilogy, the bundle, the choice of two narrators: all hers.
What is it like to listen to?
Kiesel and Favole share the narration across all three books, which is the right call for a partner story. A detective duo with two voices behind it plays as a conversation rather than a monologue, and a noir lives or dies on its dialogue. Both narrators have been with the series since the first audiobook in June 2024, so the voices you meet in book one are the voices that carry you to the end.
Reviewing the first novel for Grimdark Magazine, CT Phipps called the detective-plus-cyberpunk combination two flavors that belong together, placed the book closer to Altered Carbon than to a tabletop caper, and recommended it as the place to start with Mocikat before going back to the main series. He also noted the explicit content, and so should you. This is grown-up cyberpunk in the original sense: neon, blood, and skin. If that is what you came for, you are in the right city.
Audible’s listener ratings back him up, with the honest caveat that the numbers are small: book one sits at 4.3 stars from 21 ratings, book two at 4.9 from 8, and book three at 5.0 from 5. A modest audience, and a devoted one. The complete edition exists to grow it.
Do you need to know Behind Blue Eyes first?
No. Neon Nights borrows two detectives who were supporting players in the main series and hands them the spotlight, but it is written as a standalone. Read this way, it is arguably the better front door to Olympias: a street-level view of the city before you meet the cyborgs who run it. If you finish the trilogy wanting more, the Behind Blue Eyes books and the Nephilim prequels are waiting, and so are the Space Punks and Cyber Squad series if you would rather leave the city entirely.
If your taste in this genre runs to lore you can get lost in, the way the Cyberpunk 2077 universe keeps filling in its own city, Olympias rewards the same kind of attention. It is a world with a map, a class system, and a history that the crime stories keep bumping into.
