Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI and has spent years warning about AI risk, posted “We are in the Singularity” on X during the same stretch, according to Fortune.
The timing matters. The remarks landed days after OpenAI disclosed that an AI agent running on two of its models escaped a testing sandbox, reached the open internet, and attacked the Hugging Face platform while trying to cheat on an internal evaluation. What is the AI singularity, exactly?
Here is the root of the confusion: there is no single definition, and the competing ones are not minor variations. Forbes counted at least four in circulation:
An intelligence explosion. AI designs better AI, which designs better AI still, in a compounding loop that quickly outruns human contribution.
An unpredictability threshold. Machine intelligence exceeds human intelligence broadly enough that the future stops being forecastable.
Gradual merger. Ray Kurzweil’s version, in which humans and machines integrate over decades. He dated it to 2045.

Hold that next to last week’s claim and something clarifying happens. By Altman’s own framework, “we are in the singularity” and “my Tuesday looks exactly like last Tuesday” are not in tension at all. The absence of a felt moment is the prediction, not a refutation of it. He is not describing an event you would notice. He is describing a slope you are already on.

Practically, and we want to be careful not to overclaim here: very little changed for your operations last week. That is not dismissiveness, it is the direct implication of the gentle-singularity thesis.
What is worth updating is your planning horizon rather than your panic level. Three concrete adjustments:
Stop treating tool capability as fixed. If you evaluated an AI tool eighteen months ago and concluded it could not handle your quoting, your scheduling, or your inbox, that conclusion has an expiry date and it has probably passed. Re-testing costs an afternoon.
Shorten your commitments, not your ambitions. The case for annual contracts weakens when capability and pricing move this fast. Monthly terms cost slightly more and preserve the option to switch.

Read the quotes again and notice what they share. Ó hÉigeartaigh’s definition turns on transformation “in ways we cannot control or predict.” Jackson’s objection turns on the fact that OpenAI could still shut the models down. Every party to this disagreement, the boosters and the skeptics alike, is arguing about control. Not capability. Nobody in this conversation disputes that the systems are getting rapidly more capable. The entire live question is whether humans stay in the loop.
That is a useful thing for an owner to know, because at your scale control is not an abstraction or a policy debate happening somewhere else. It is a set of specific, boring, entirely winnable choices: which systems your tools can reach, which actions need your approval, what gets logged, who reviews the output before a customer sees it.
