On August 6, OpenAI made text chats unlimited on free ChatGPT accounts, with a new default model called GPT-5.6 Luna and a Think button that lets it work longer on a hard question. That single change reshuffles the list of free AI tools for small business owners, because the best-known one just removed the limit that made people ration it.

The short version: Free ChatGPT now handles unlimited text conversations, which covers most of what a small business actually does with AI: drafting, summarizing, answering questions, and thinking a decision through out loud. Files, images, and voice still have separate caps. The part worth planning around is not buried in the terms, because OpenAI’s own executives have said the unlimited subscription model is temporary. What exactly changed?

OpenAI announced on August 6 that GPT-5.6 Luna becomes the default model for Free and Go accounts, replacing GPT-5.5. Those users also get unlimited text chats and the Think button, which hands the model more time on a single message when the question deserves it. TechCrunch reported that the rollout began that week, with full access arriving during the week of August 10.

Two things did not change. Paid tiers still exist, and Plus and Pro subscribers received an updated GPT-5.6 Sol along with a slider that controls how long the model thinks before answering. And the word unlimited applies to text only. OpenAI said there will still be separate limits for files, images, voice, and image generation, which is exactly where a lot of practical small business work lives.

On quality, OpenAI’s internal evaluations put factual errors 62 percent less common for GPT-5.6 Luna and 68 percent less common for GPT-5.6 Sol than the older GPT-5.5-Instant. Those are the company’s own numbers on its own tests, so read them as a direction rather than a guarantee. The direction still matters to you: the free model sits closer to the paid one than it did a week ago.

Are free AI tools for small business finally good enough?

For text, mostly yes. That is a larger sentence than it looks.

Think about what a small business actually asks AI to do in a normal week. Rewrite a quote so it does not read as rushed. Turn six lines of scribbled notes into a follow-up email. Summarize a contract before the lawyer bills for explaining it. Draft a job post. Talk through whether it is time to raise prices. What free still does not cover well is volume and integration. In a market where three or four companies ship comparable models within days of each other, the hardest thing to win back is the reflex of which box a person opens when a question occurs to them. Will unlimited last?

Nick Turley, OpenAI’s head of ChatGPT, has called the current subscription model accidental, something the company backed into to manage overwhelming demand rather than a considered design. Speaking on the Bg2 Pod and reported in March, he put it plainly: “There’s no world in which pricing doesn’t significantly evolve when the technology is changing this quickly.” He has compared an unlimited AI plan to an unlimited electricity plan, which is a useful image, since electricity is metered for a reason. Back in January 2025, Sam Altman said the $200 Pro tier was losing money.

So the honest read is this. Free and unlimited is true today, it is genuinely useful today, and the people running it have told you in advance that it is a phase.

What should you actually do this month?

The risk here is not that the price changes. Prices change. The risk is quieter than that, and it is the reason we would push on this at all.

When a tool costs money per seat, you make decisions about it. You decide who gets access, what they use it for, and whether it earned its line on the statement. When a tool is free and unlimited, nobody decides anything. Everyone improvises, the wording that works lives inside individual chat histories that no one else can see, and the business quietly starts depending on a process that was never written down. Then the terms change, and you learn you had a habit rather than a system.

So take the free capacity, and spend some of it making the work portable. Write down the three tasks you now hand to AI most often, in plain sentences, the way you would explain them to someone in their first week. Keep the wording that works somewhere shared, not locked in one person’s account.
