AI Text Watermarks Are Here. What They Actually Catch

If you asked Claude to tighten a proposal, draft a service page, or clean up a customer email in the past two weeks, that text now carries a mark you cannot see. Neither can your customer. It is woven into the word choices themselves, and it travels when the text gets copied.

That matters because of what people will reach for in the meantime. The consumer “AI detectors” that have been circulating for three years do not read watermarks at all. They guess from writing style, and they are notoriously wrong in both directions, flagging careful human prose as synthetic and waving generated text through. Nothing about this announcement makes those tools accurate. If a client ever confronts you with a detector score, that score is still not evidence of anything.

Does this create legal risk for a small business?

Then audit for substance rather than for detection. Take your five most important pages and ask what is on them that a competitor’s model could not have produced from the same prompt.
