The short version: QuickBooks Online raised prices on three plans effective August 1, 2026, and Intuit tied the change to new capability powered by Intuit Intelligence. Essentials went from $75 to $85 a month, Plus from $115 to $140, and Advanced from $275 to $340. Over a year that is $120, $300 and $780 more. Simple Start did not change, and Simple Start is the tier where Intuit’s AI chat already lives.
Read the pricing page today and the ladder is plain. Every AI feature that arrived alongside the increase is a narrow, named agent: Accounting AI, Payments AI, Sales Tax AI, Customer AI, Project Management AI, Finance AI. The general-purpose piece, the thing most owners actually mean when they say they want AI in their books, sits on the $38 tier that did not move. And the conversational access that got the loudest announcement this summer, QuickBooks working inside Claude and ChatGPT, costs nothing extra on any tier.
What actually changed on your QuickBooks bill?
Intuit’s own product update page states that the updated pricing for Essentials, Plus and Advanced subscriptions “will be reflected on each subscription’s next billing date” from August 1, 2026, and that “Pricing for QuickBooks Simple Start and QuickBooks Ledger remains unchanged.”

Percentages are the honest way to feel this one. The heavier your plan already was, the harder it landed. Advanced holders absorbed nearly a quarter more.
There is a second number nobody prints. The public pricing page today advertises 50 percent off for three months on every tier. A business signing up for Plus today pays $70 for three months and $140 for the next nine, which is $1,470 across the first year. The business that has been on Plus since 2023 pays $1,680. The customer who stayed pays $210 more than the customer who just walked in, for an identical product. On Advanced that gap is $510. Which QuickBooks tier has which AI?
This is the part worth doing before you decide whether the increase was fair. Listed exactly as Intuit words them today:
- Simple Start, $38, unchanged. “Expert-guided setup and onboarding” (beta), “AI Chat for instant insights” (beta, limited capacity), “Categorizes expenses”, “Maximizes tax deductions”.
- Essentials, $85, up 13.3 percent. Adds “Cleans up your books with Accounting AI” and “Gets you paid faster with Payments AI”.
- Plus, $140, up 21.7 percent. Adds reconciliation, profit and loss insights, anomaly detection, “Sales Tax AI” and “Customer AI”.
- Advanced, $340, up 23.6 percent. Adds “Project Management AI” (beta) and “Finance AI”.
Notice what is where. The tier that absorbed no increase is the one carrying the open-ended assistant. The tiers that did absorb the increase bought specific automation for specific chores: sales tax filing, reconciliation, project cost allocation. Those are real, and for the right business they are worth more than $25 a month. They are simply not the same product as “AI in QuickBooks,” and the announcement language invites you to hear them as the same thing.
What does the Claude and ChatGPT connector cost?
On July 28, 2026, Intuit announced expanded QuickBooks capability inside Claude and ChatGPT. The blog post’s own line is “This is moving beyond read-only access to your data. It’s your business, fully actionable.” Concretely, the connector can create, update, send and delete invoices, manage recurring invoices, generate payment links, build estimates, query employee rosters and payslip history, check payroll readiness, and pull loan benchmarking against comparable QuickBooks businesses.
Intuit describes these as “available now, no extra setup required” for existing customers. There is no separate line item. Two constraints do sit in the footnotes and are easy to miss: some features require QuickBooks Payments, and they are “not available in U.S. territories or outside the U.S.” Access also inherits your existing QuickBooks permission structure, so the connector cannot see what the signed-in user cannot see.
That last detail is the one we would underline. The connector does not become a second set of hands with its own keys. It works inside the permissions you already granted a person, which means somebody still owns every decision it takes. That is the right shape for this. Reconciliation agents and clean-books automation do not remove the need for a bookkeeper’s judgment; they move the hour from keying receipts to checking exceptions, which is the part a human is actually good at.
Is the QuickBooks price increase worth it for your business?
Do the gap arithmetic rather than the feature-list arithmetic.
The step from Plus to Advanced is $200 a month, or $2,400 a year. It buys 20 additional user seats and two AI features, one of them still in beta. Spread across the seats alone that is $120 per seat per year, which is cheap if you genuinely need 25 logins and indefensible if you have six people and bought Advanced for Finance AI.
The step from Simple Start to Plus is $102 a month, or $1,224 a year. If you do not carry inventory, do not run projects, and do not need sales tax automation, that $1,224 is buying user seats and reporting depth. The AI chat you wanted came with the $38 plan.
The honest test is the one we keep coming back to in what to actually pay for in AI software: name the specific chore, then check whether the cheaper tier already does it. A named agent for a chore you do not have is not a feature, it is a line item.
A correction to the price tables going around
One widely copied table lists the change as Simple Start $35 to $38, Essentials $60 to $85, Plus $99 to $140 and Advanced $200 to $340, which would make Advanced a 70 percent jump. We checked it against four sources and it does not hold. Intuit’s own product update page states plainly that Simple Start pricing is unchanged, and Insightful Accountant, Fourlane and Workforce.com independently report $75, $115 and $275 as the prior figures. The outlier table appears to be comparing against much older prices, and it is circulating as though it describes August 2026.
If you want certainty, do not trust any table including this one. Open your last invoice from July and the one from September and read the difference. That is the only number that describes your account.
The larger pattern here is not a villain story. Software you already own is where most small businesses will meet AI first, well before they go shopping for anything new, and that is genuinely good news given how many owners tell surveys they have no idea where to start. It just means the buying decision moved. It is no longer “should we get AI,” it is “which rung of the ladder we already stand on has the thing we need.” That question has a cheaper answer than the pricing page implies, and it is the same instinct behind picking tools by the job you need done rather than by tier name. It also puts a sharper edge on something we covered when adoption started outrunning the rules: when AI arrives inside the accounting system by subscription rather than by decision, nobody schedules the conversation about who checks its work.
